A few months ago, to my absolute delight, I discovered that the “Beyond Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience” travelling exhibit was coming to my city, Jacksonville, Florida!

I love art, museums, and any sort of immersive artwork exhibits, so I have been waiting well over a year to visit this traveling exhibit, ever since I discovered it in Houston and wasn’t able to go when it was there. It’s all about Vincent Van Gogh’s life and turns his artwork into an immersive experience.

I admit – prices to this exhibit are quite pricey, especially compared to the value. Prices range from $40 at the cheapest for adults ($29 for children), up to $84 for VIP tickets. I wouldn’t recommend VIP tickets since it basically just gives you a merchandise package; I found that the basic timed entry was fine. You also have to pay for parking at the nearby garage, which I believe was $8-10.
This exhibit is essentially an hour-long immersive projection show. To start, visitors walk past billboards with information on Van Gogh’s life to read and get a better understanding of his life experience.

Then, we walked into this large room with a floor to ceiling projection show. And I mean this literally – it projects on the floor all the way to a very high wall (doesn’t cover the ceiling however, which I could see as being very claustrophobic or dizzying).

This show lasts about an hour and turns Van Gogh’s artwork into a living experience. You see paint strokes, moving birds, swelling waves, blinking paintings, and more. I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes because it’s basically standing and watching the projections for an hour, with a few seats available.

It loops through various pieces of artwork, ranging from his floral arrangements to portraits to writing to sketches. My favorites were the florals – the colors and vibrancy is incredible. This loop takes about an hour. I don’t think that there’s any specific time limit on how long you can stay, like I don’t think that they’ll kick you out, but it does get a bit crowded if people linger too long beyond their hour because new people come in for their timed entry.

The Van Gogh exhibit is the ultimate Instagram-worthy experience, if you’re into social media, photography and video. It was really beautiful and I loved it! However, I would not recommend paying for the extra expensive tickets or would go more than once. $40-50 for an hour-long experience? I wish that I had come up with this idea! What a genius concept.

Be sure to check out the exhibit’s website to find out if it’s coming to a city near you!
