I Tried Yoga for the First Time

So, like when I wrote about trying Zumba for the “first time”… this wasn’t exactly my first time trying yoga. I’ve only gone to around two in-person yoga classes a few years ago, but I used to follow online YouTube yoga channels. However, this was my first time trying yoga in a very long time and in this new studio.

I enjoy group fitness classes like yoga or Zumba because I like to….

a) Not have the responsibility of planning a full workout for myself.

b) I find classes very motivational. It’s definitely intimidating, especially with the super fit people in the class, but I like having the instructor continue to push and inspire me throughout the class.

When you go to class, I would get there a few minutes early because many yoga classes can fill up quickly, especially evening or weekend classes. At most studios, you don’t need to buy and bring your own yoga mat, however, some places require you to pay a dollar or two to rent one for the class. At places like 24-Hour Fitness and larger chain gyms like that, you shouldn’t have to pay for a basic yoga mat, but I would definitely clean the mat before you use it. If you want to buy a yoga mat, it should only be between $8-20 for a mat, depending on where you buy it.

I love yoga because I find it very peaceful and calming. The instructors are always super calm and their voices are very mellow.

In yoga, there’s no pressure. You don’t have to be the most flexible or have the moves down perfectly, but you can just do what you can. You can move at your own pace and essentially do what feels right.

You also get a good workout with yoga, despite most people thinking that it’s mostly stretching. Sometimes the most simple moves will get you sweaty and shaking. There were definitely times where I’ve thought that a move looks too simple to be effective, but by the end of that move, I’m sweaty, shaking and wishing that it would end.

And in almost all classes, it ends in a position where you lie on your back, completely chill for a few minutes.

I know that yoga isn’t for everyone, with it’s slow pace and subtle movements, but I love it. I would recommend trying yoga at least once in your life.
