For over a year and a half, I lived away from my hometown of Tucson, Arizona. During my time away, there were so many little things that I missed about living in Arizona. Now that I’m back in my hometown, here are a few things that I missed about this state that I have grown to know and love:
1) The stars. Clear skies. At night, you can see the Milky Way!
2) “But it’s a dry heat!” (aka., dry, warm weather). After living in Houston, Texas, and Washington D.C., it’s nice to not have to worry about excessive moisture. However, I’m one of the rare individuals who actually enjoy humidity.
3) The sun. It just seems different in other places. In Arizona, the sun seems so much brighter.
4) The saguaros and cactuses everywhere. (Yes, “cactuses” is the plural of cactus when following AP style!) My drive to school and work takes me along giant forests of saguaros, and every day I’m amazed by their magnificence.
5) Conservation-based living style. People in Tucson are very conscientious of having a sustainable lifestyle. Everything from water, energy, recycling, garbage, compost, light, the natural environment and animals are considered.
6) THE BEST MEXICAN FOOD IN THE USA! Need I say more?
7) Big city – small town vibes. Cities in Arizona are relatively big, but not compared to other U.S. cities. It’s small enough where you can hardly go anywhere without running into someone you know, but large enough that you have options on where you want to go and you you meet.
8) Although I’m now a vegetarian… fresh steak from the Arizona open ranges is quite delicious.
9) Appreciation for nature, the night sky, astronomy / observatories, science — it’s an entire community feel. Tucson is a “science city” with my university, the University of Arizona, at its’ core.

Of course, this is only my perspective from my experience living in Tucson, Ariz. I love living Tucson but I am excited for wherever life takes me next!
